A belated merry new year to one and all and we kick off this year’s podcasts with an hour long mix for you to download containing some of my favourites from the last year. Starting off once again with the awesome cover of “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” we journey through reggae, afro, soul, breaks and beats. It’s the last show before christmas so why not kick off with a funk cover of this year’s christmas number 1. Australian outfit, The Apples take on Rage Against the Machine in a satisfyingly brassy manner. We then start to up the tempo with a bit more funk and latin before concluding with one of my favourite tunes from the past couple of years - Zed Bias’ remix of the already masssive ‘Sahara’ by Soil & Pimp Sessions. Ho ho ho, and stuff…get downloading!
The Apples - Killing
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - Why Don’t we all Stop Paying Taxes?
Akwaaba - Aiff
All the People - Cramp Your Style
The Hi-Fly Orchestra - Roda de Samba
Negrocan - Brasil Nago
Up, Bustle & Out - Los Locos Cubanos (Snowboy remix)
As a tribute to Rage Against the Machine releasing Simon Cowell’s stranglehold on the christmas number one (and helping to make a big fat pile of cash for charity in the process) here’s a take on “Killing in the Name of” you may not know of. “So why haven’t you played it in the podcast?” I hear you ask. Well it just so happens I’ve given it a spin in the mildly festive Show 50!
Show 49 of the podcast is 30 minutes packed with almost-christmas crackers. We kick off with another killer from the Hot Coins ‘Valient Truth EP’ which featured in show 48. We then continue into some huge bass wobbling UK rap from Profisee & Eprom and follow on into a range of old favourites and rounding off with everyone’s favourite Bill Withers tune!
Crikey has it really been that long since the last show? to make up for it we’ve got another half an hour of crackers kicking off with a classic from Glen McCrae. We then take a short trip up soul lane via the epic ‘Girl Your Need a change of mind’ and the well known surefire dancefloor filler from the Jackson Sisters. We round things off with a fantastic mashup of Amerie, Massive Attack and the Rolling Stones!
Gwen McRae - 90% of me is you
Joey Gilmore - Somebody Done Took my Baby and Gone
I’ve knocked up a special show this time round with a 2 hour whopper! I’ve crammed as many styles and tunes as I could into this 120-ish min mix. Download it here or use the subscribe option at the bottom of this rather lengthy tracklist. So less chat and let’s get stuck in!

I did a post a few weeks back on some of the online record shops that I use. However, if you can’t be bothered with this old fashioned and boring way of satisfying your vinyl habit and prefer to actual walk somewhere to support your local independent record shop then here is the site for you:
Record Shop City is looking to track down all Manchester (and nearabouts) based record shops and seems to be doing a jolly nice job. Go and check them out as well as follow them on twitter.
Welcome one and all to the not so eagerly anticipated show 46 of my Jolly Podcast series. This time round we kick off with an absolute stormer in the form of Tod Terje’s massive tinkering of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’. As the old saying goes ‘if it ain’t broken don’t fix it’ but gosh if this just doesn’t work out brilliantly anyway. We then carry on for a funk and disco workout before concluding with a couple of cheeky reggae numbers from Johhny Clarke and the JJ Allstars. Hope you Enjoy!
Fellow manchester music blogger’s and night putter-onners, Northern Comfort graciously allowed me to knock together an hour long mix for their smashing website. It’s a mix of mellow moments building up into a quirky funk crescendo, some of which you pay have noticed getting a spin in previous podcasts. Check out the mix here and look out for their night down the Salutation Pub. Next saturday sounds like it will be huge…
