Widdy’s Jolly Podcast Show 50

It’s the last show before christmas so why not kick off with a funk cover of this year’s christmas number 1. Australian outfit, The Apples take on Rage Against the Machine in a satisfyingly brassy manner. We then start to up the tempo with a bit more funk and latin before concluding with one of my favourite tunes from the past couple of years - Zed Bias’ remix of the already masssive ‘Sahara’ by Soil & Pimp Sessions. Ho ho ho, and stuff…get downloading!

  1. The Apples - Killing
  2. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - Why Don’t we all Stop Paying Taxes?
  3. Akwaaba - Aiff
  4. All the People - Cramp Your Style
  5. The Hi-Fly Orchestra - Roda de Samba
  6. Negrocan - Brasil Nago
  7. Up, Bustle & Out - Los Locos Cubanos (Snowboy remix)
  8. Soil & Pimp Sessions - Sahara (Zed Bias remix)

The Apples - Killing in the Name of

December21

As a tribute to Rage Against the Machine releasing Simon Cowell’s stranglehold on the christmas number one (and helping to make a big fat pile of cash for charity in the process) here’s a take on “Killing in the Name of” you may not know of.  “So why haven’t you played it in the podcast?” I hear you ask.  Well it just so happens I’ve given it a spin in the mildly festive Show 50!

Looking for Record Shops in Manchester?

October17

I did a post a few weeks back on some of the online record shops that I use. However, if you can’t be bothered with this old fashioned and boring way of satisfying your vinyl habit and prefer to actual walk somewhere to support your local independent record shop then here is the site for you:

Record Shop City is looking to track down all Manchester (and nearabouts) based record shops and seems to be doing a jolly nice job. Go and check them out as well as follow them on twitter.

iparp

Welcome one and all to the not so eagerly anticipated show 46 of my Jolly Podcast series. This time round we kick off with an absolute stormer in the form of Tod Terje’s massive tinkering of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’. As the old saying goes ‘if it ain’t broken don’t fix it’ but gosh if this just doesn’t work out brilliantly anyway. We then carry on for a funk and disco workout before concluding with a couple of cheeky reggae numbers from Johhny Clarke and the JJ Allstars. Hope you Enjoy!

  1. Stevie Wonder - Superstition (Todd Terje edit)
  2. The Elektrons - Get Up
  3. Earthmother - Rubberneck
  4. Earl Lett - Born With the Feelings
  5. The Meters- Funky Miracle
  6. The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Hold on Tight
  7. Johnny Clarke - Enter Into His Gates With Praise
  8. LoJJ Allstars - Soup

Northern Comfort Guest Mix

October2

northerncomfort2

Fellow manchester music blogger’s and night putter-onners, Northern Comfort graciously allowed me to knock together an hour long mix for their smashing website.  It’s a mix of mellow moments building up into a quirky funk crescendo, some of which you pay have noticed getting a spin in previous podcasts.  Check out the mix here and look out for their night down the Salutation Pub.  Next saturday sounds like it will be huge…

Awesome Caribbean Band Cover Versions!

September19

I happened to be walking through Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester on Friday night to find a crowd of people watching this excellent Caribbean steel band playing a bunch of cover versions. As I turned up they were playing an instrumental version of ‘Patience’ by Take That which was actually superb. Anyway I managed to video some bits and bobs of the rest of their set:

Here’s half a minute or so of them covering Jimmy Cliff’s ‘I Can See Clearly Now’. This works so nicely with steel drums!

Next up they did a cheeky version of ‘Tainted Love’ by soft cell:

Their final tune (before the encore) of the evening was their version of Bob Marley’s ‘no Woman No Cry’. I’m really pleased I managed to video the whole tune complete with crowd singalong. Excuse my shakey dancey camera!

But that wasn’t it! For an encore they only went and did a blistering steel version of the Lambada! Again I managed to video the full thing. Wonderful stuff!

I think the band was called Hi-Tech Caribbean Systems (at least that’s what their t-shirts read!). I was chatting to one of the band members afterwards and it seems they don’t have a CD of their tunes or a website! Such a shame as I’d happily play any of their tunes and I bet lots of others would too.

Sort it out guys!
